Butyrate is naturally produced in the gut through the fermentation of carbohydrates (polysaccharides, oligosaccharides and disaccharides) by the gut microflora. However, in poultry, the production of natural butyric acid does not occur until 15 days of age and in older birds, the use of lower fibre diets and NSP enzymes have reduced the amount of carbohydrate available for fermentation, and hence butyrate. Therefore, UltraGuard Duo offers a unique micro-granulate containing a combination of protected sodium and calcium butyrates that delivers active butyrate, and provides protection, along the length of the small and large intestine.
