OWEN BRENNAN TO UNDERTAKE BALE MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE

Devenish Group Executive Chairman Owen Brennan is preparing to complete the Bale Mountain Challenge in aid of Farm Africa. Owen, and a group of 13 others from the feed and food industry will be trekking through the remote Bale Mountains at altitude, covering a challenging 117km and scaling four peaks over 4,000m in just six days.

Beginning on 6th November, the group of 14 represents retailers, suppliers and producers from across the UK food industry, are uniting to help tackle the biggest issue facing the world today: hunger.

It is shocking to learn recently that hunger kills more people every year than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. Nearly a billion people in the world are hungry and in sub-Saharan Africa 1 in 4 people is undernourished.

That’s where Farm Africa, the Devenish Group’s Charity of the year comes in. The charity takes a commercial and long-term approach to ending hunger for farmers and their communities in eastern Africa by empowering them to grow enough food to feed their families and to kick-start sustainable local businesses. Their innovative projects focus on both economic and environmental sustainability.

While trekking the group will pass through the richly diverse, but threatened, Bale Mountains eco-region where Farm Africa is running projects which will reduce deforestation, improving and sustaining the livelihoods of up to 878,000 local inhabitants and benefitting a further 12 million people living on arid land further downstream.

Following the trek they will visit a Farm Africa project in the remote Dello Mena district in southern Ethiopia to see the work first-hand and meet some of the local people who are being empowered to change their lives and build better futures.

Owen will be funding the trek, but of course this is a fundraising effort, and so if you would like to make a donation, you can do so by visiting https://www.justgiving.com/Owen-Brennan/

Keep looking out for updates and pictures from the trek both here and our Twitter account @DevenishNutri.
